Personality;
Ranka Lee is one of the main characters in the series of Macross Frontier. Understanding Ranka’s past before the beginning of the series is key to her development and personality throughout the series.
Eleven years before the start of the anime, Ranka lived aboard the 117th research fleet with her mother and older brother. Her mother had been infected with a v-type virus which in the anime is a fatal disease. When her mother became pregnant with Ranka, instead of terminating the baby within the mother, the virus chose to co-exist with the unborn child.
This gave Ranka a special power that had never been seen before. Instead of the virus being terminal, the parasites resided in her stomach and produced a special fold wave whenever she sang. No one suspected that this would have been the side effect that came from a v-type virus pregnancy.
Until the age of five, Ranka enjoyed a stable life with her mother and older brother. One day after she sang, the vajra appeared and attacked the ship they were on. They had been called by Ranka’s fold waves and her singing. Her brother begged her to keep the secret to herself that her song had called them, and right before her eyes everyone she knew died on the ship as the vajra crushed it to pieces. This event was so traumatizing to her that Ranka developed a case of dissociative amnesia to block out the traumatic experience.
Due to not having those crucial memories of her past, Ranka was able to be more carefree and live a semi normal and functional life. She is spoiled by her brother Ozma Lee, works a part time job, and basically lives the life of a normal teenage girl. Although a little shy, that doesn’t stop Ranka from being a generally warm and caring person. An example of this is when she takes in Ai-kun without hesitating or knowing what type of life form he is. She just does it without question. Later in the series she is able to go to Gallia 4 and drop everything to go rescue Alto just so she can tell him happy birthday. Because she is able to do things like this, in episode 13 Alto describes Ranka as the girl that always brings surprises.
A very big part of her nature besides being warm is her unguarded actions and perceptions. She is able to tell people what she thinks regardless of the situation she is in. She does it in such a way however that normally people appreciate what she has to say, or it adds comedy to the situation. This is shown when she meets Alto for the first time. After he gives her his shirt and is drying her clothing, Ranka remarks that she had thought he might have been a girl changing because he was so pretty. This causes Alto to make an outburst about not being a woman.
Her actions, like her speech are very unguarded. If she is embarrassed, upset, or angry, normally the emotion can be seen crossing her features. One good example of this is when she is in the Miss Macross pageant. When she goes to sing, she notices that Alto isn’t there like he had promised to be. The emotions cross her face as her being in disbelief at his absence, angry because he’d broken their promise, and then really upset before she begins her song. It’s really easy for people to tell how she’s feeling at any given time.
Also a big part of Ranka’s personality is that she is very much keeps things to herself that should be said out loud if her words have the tendency to hurt or cause others to have a hard time or become trouble. Because she does keep some thoughts to herself, she tends to keep her head in the clouds. In doing this, she normally comes off as being distracted when things are going on around her. This makes her clumsy in instances and usually manifests through either breaking something or tripping and falling flat on her face. She also tends to be clumsy when she is upset about something.
Even though she is very warm and is willing to stretch out her hand to others, people tend to take advantage of this. Because she is so nice, and usually doesn’t fight back or get into arguments, she lets herself get corralled easily into situations that she would rather not be in. At one point in the story after she realizes she is in love with Alto, Ranka sees Alto and Sheryl hugging on the roof as she was going to go confess. Because of her hurt and unstable emotions, the vajra that are nesting in the ship start to attack the people on board. Alto and Sheryl make her sing, and instead of helping matters, her singing actually causes things to get worse by agitating the vajra.
That is one thing that Ranka has trouble with in the series. While she has the strength to do these incredible feats like singing to help the fighter pilots, she also has trouble saying no. Sometimes it pushes her into doing the opposite of what she thinks is right. Towards the start of the series, it’s a little less evident, but as the series goes on, most of her inner dialogue ends up either asking her brother or Alto if what she is doing is the right thing. She constantly seeks approval until the very end of the series where she’s strong enough to do what she thinks needs to be done. While she can be very soft spoken and seek approval at times, Ranka also has a part of her that can be very stubborn. When she is suspended from school for entering the Miss Macross pageant contest and her brother gets mad and tells her to stop trying to sing, Ranka throws pots and pans at him in an argument and storms out of the house. She then leaves and refuses to return home until her brother allows her to sing. Later when she brings back Elmo, a talent manager that scouts her at the Zentran mall, she sits beside Elmo and never once backs down until Ozma gives in.
One way we see her strength is through her dissociative amnesia. Towards the beginning of the series each time something traumatic happens her reactions are more intense. Whenever anyone close to her is hurt, or Ranka is in immediate danger, her dissociative amnesia would trigger and cause her to have an episode. When Ozma is brought back injured and unconscious, her first reaction is to freak out as she starts to remember bits of her past. It overwhelms her so much that she is rendered unconscious by the memories themselves. As she gathers strength from her experiences and friendships, and the memories of her past from the 117th research fleet start to surface, she becomes a little bit stronger. Also, after finding out the truth that her voice and song were what ultimately led to the destruction of the 117th research fleet, she is able to move past that with the help of Brera Sterne, Alto and Sheryl.
In episode twenty two, when she finally remembers almost everything, Ranka sets out with Brera to take Ai-kun back to his own kind leaving Alto there to watch after her as she goes. She was able to confess her feelings and knowing that others wouldn’t understand her actions, she shows her strength to be able to move forward despite disapproval.
Even though she is strong, her strength is something that she was given and shown by Sheryl and Alto. These two characters helped her and pushed her forward in her goals. Ranka was able to go from being just a normal ordinary every day girl with a bad past, to a strong girl whose song helped save her friends and everyone in the Frontier fleet. If it hadn’t of been for Alto and Sheryl she probably wouldn’t have become the dynamic character that people know and love now.

This is like something you would see in the Zentran mall...It's nice, but why do I have it?
[Leaning back, and more in focus and viewable to anyone watching Ranka rubs at the back of her neck, biting her lower lip she speaks up finally, although a little bit more hesitant than usual after everything that had just been going on back in her own world.]
Excuse me? Is anyone listening out there? My name is Ranka Lee, and I'm not sure what I'm really doing here.
[Her hair presses to the sides of her head as she seems a little more worried now. There is a pregnant pause before she looks back at the camera and her face gets very close.]
Any information would be appreciated! Thank you in advance!
[She lowers her head in a slight bow, as she looks back over her shoulder, the words soft again as she talks more to herself.]
It's kind of...grey here...

It was almost like twisting, turning and falling slowly through the air. Almost like the time that she had been out in space when she and Brera had been returning Ai to his home. It was the same feeling of being engulfed and alone. An intense heat was all she could remember after that. The sensation of someone caressing each and every inch of her body making her nerves sing. Biting down on her lip was the most she could do as those shadowy hands explored, stroked and teased Ahh...ahh... Her pants was the only noise that registered in her ears in reaction to the symphony of sensations.
Just as quickly as the dizzying whirl had come over her, Ranka’s eyes shot open as he sat up gasping.
Her hands shot to her cheeks as she gasped trying to recover her breath. That dream had been so intimate and personal that it caused a blush to spread over her cheeks. Ranka let her hands come up to touch her hot cheeks as she shut her eyes quickly and shook her head. Her hair raised up a few centimeters as if able to sense her embarrassment as she managed to utter out, “What was I...?”
That dream had felt so real that her whole body was still tingly. Her lower body felt pleasantly numb and achy. It was almost as if she had really done something with someone. Ranka’s eyes opened suddenly as she gasped. “Those hands! Were they Alto’s?”
As soon as those words left her lips she cried out softly and covered her head with her hands, her knees pulling up to her chest. No, no, no! It couldn’t have been Alto’s right? Even if I have feelings for him, I saw the the way that Sheryl and Alto were after my live concert at the school. They were hugging! The same familiar ache came back into her chest as she reached up with her hand to touch at where the ache emanated from. “Alto...”
It was the feeling of her hand hitting the warm flesh of her chest that caused Ranka to come back to her senses. Looking down slowly, her eyes widened and the blush that had just started to go away covered her face, and as if her hair hadn’t been raised any higher it almost stood straight “Where are my clothes? What’s going on?”
Reaching down to pull up the sheets to cover her chest, she looked around the room. In all the excitement up waking up, Ranka hadn’t taken the time to check her surroundings. Everything in the room was foreign, and felt so cold and unfamiliar. A small squeak of surprise left her as she backed up against the cold head board. “Where am I? Why am I like this? Where is this?!”
The questions to this mystery were slowly starting to overwhelm the singer as she pulled up the sheets to her chin as she clutched her legs to her chest half curling into a ball. Her eyes continued to scan the room for a sign that this might have been a trick of some sort. But after everything they had gone through recently, she didn’t think that anyone would do something like this to her. She couldn’t see anyone being able to get away with something like this. Not with her brother or with- What would she call him now? Ozma Lee had taken her in after all, and even without being her real brother. He raised me, he’s still my big brother too Taking a moment to think of the strong pilot Ranka gripped at the covers, “Brother...”
Brera was her real brother and someone that she wanted to get to know better. He was as much a part of her past as she was of his. The connection that they had felt had been real blood bond. No, neither one of my brothers would have let something like this happen...Have I been kidnapped?!
Throughout the whole event her body, and hair, had been on pins and needles. If that was true then the dream that she had could have been a side effect of a medicine. Ranka didn’t want to think about any other alternative. After all, if she had been touched while unconscious, could it have caused those pleasurable sensations? Disgust welled up inside her as she buried her face in her hands and trembled. Taking a few deep breaths he had to calm herself down. What would Sheryl do in this situation?
“Sheryl, I hope your safe.” If the other had been there, she would have made some make shift clothing or looked for her own, right? A few more deep breaths and Ranka slowly lowered her hands from her face. Looking around the room more carefully, she noticed her clothing at the foot of the bed. It had been the clothing that she had been wearing when they had finally landed on the vajra home planet.
Gingerly touching her feet to the ground a chill ran up her spine causing her to grit her teeth and shiver. “Cold!”
Moving towards the clothing as quietly as possible, Ranka looked around before her hand touched the white frilly fabric of the dress. Smoothing over it, she thought about what had happened for all of her friends, and especially for her. Her reddish eyes narrowed with determination as she picked up the dress and gave it a sharp snap into the air to make sure that nothing fell out or was there that would cause her to be injured or trapped somewhere else. “Okay. First get dressed and then try to leave.”
Nodding her head with some finality to the situation, Ranka pushed away the unpleasant parts. I need to get back to them. They’ll be waiting for me. Alto, Sheryl, Brother, I’ll be back soon! Don’t worry! It was the reason that she had been able to shake free from Grace in those final moments. The people that she held most dear had been waiting for her to come back to them, and that was where the green haired woman had wanted to be.
After putting on her undergarments and tugging on the dress, Ranka leaned down carefully toeing on her matching boots as she sighed. The dress felt a little tighter than she was used to at the top, and she stood up walking towards the mirror that was in the room. “It was just fine when I put it on earlier. Why is it like this now?”
Moving over to a larger mirror, Ranka blinked and just stared. She reached out to touch the cold glass, mostly to make sure that the mirror was real and not a fake. The person staring back at her hadn’t been the person that she had been before she had woken up in this place. My hair is longer. I think I’m at least two inches taller than I normally am. But the biggest surprise was in her breasts. Her hands moved down over the top of her dress as her eyes widened as she backed away from the mirror slightly, “What happened? Does it really happen this fast?!”
Shaking her head out, Ranka slapped her hands a few times against her cheeks. Focus! You need to get out of here to answer these questions. Sheryl wouldn’t have stood around and just waited. If Alto could see this, he’d be embarrassed for me! “I need to get out of here. I have to find them and go back.”
Another item had caught Ranka’s attention. I’m used to wearing necklaces with my costumes, but I’ve never worn something like this myself. Moving closer once more to the mirror to inspect it, her small hands brushed the leather collar around her neck. Her fingers closed over the small music note that was on the choker she wore. Reaching around the back, Ranka tried to look for a clasp. When she didn’t find one, she made a soft noise in the back of her throat. Maybe if I pull hard enough, it’ll come off.
“One, two, three!” Grabbing the leather with all her might, Ranka let her foot rest behind her as she leaned forward and tugged as hard as she could. The material didn’t budge and all she could do was give it her best. Tugging as hard as she could once more, the green haired girl gritted her teeth. Trying until her hands were sore, Ranka sat on the side of the bed as her hands throbbed in protest to another try. It wasn’t tight enough to bother her, but it wasn’t loose enough for her to slide off either.
“I’ll have to have it removed when I find the others.” That was the only solution that she could come up with. When she found them, Sheryl would probably laugh at her and find the clasp easily on the stupid thing. Noticing a window, Ranka immediately perked up as he moved towards it to look outside. Maybe I can get some clues...
Looking outside the window, the first think Ranka noticed was the sky. As she leaned forward a little pressing her face to the window pane, she just stared at the open blue space as her eyes widened. It’s so beautiful! We definitely still have to be on that planet, right? I can’t be too far from the others! At that moment her heart started to beat heavily in her chest as she let out a sigh of relief. “This had to be a misunderstanding! I’m sure of it now.”
Of course, she became less sure when her eyes scanned downward. Her eyes widened once more. There were people walking around, and everything else seemed normal except for one thing...The technology wasn’t something she recognized. It was too old, foreign and odd. Her fingers gripped more at the window edge as she shook her head slowly backing up. She backed up until the back of her legs hit the bed startling her. “Maybe I’m not as close as I thought to being home.”
A sense of dread filled the pit of her stomach as she looked towards the door. She had done all she could do for the moment. It was time to get answers. Approaching the door, she gingerly touched the handle and turned it. When no device went off to warn anyone that she was trying to leave, Ranka sighed gently in relief and opened the door to peek out. In the hall Ranka noticed a few maids walking around, as she opened the door a little wider she waved out to one of them, “E-excuse me? I have a few questions for you...Maybe you can help?”
